The Simpsons and Philosophy is not just for fans of the program; it's for anyone interested in how philosophic, literary and social issues are represented in American popular culture. It answers such questions as: Is Bart Simpson a Nietzschean hero? How does allusion work? Do intellectuals make good leaders?

The book was published with an index containing long strings of undifferentiated references and lacking headings for episodes. As a result, my son had difficulty finding what he was looking for when searching for material for a school project. He asked me to write a new index for him and his friends. This is it. The episode numbers in the index are the episode number's in the book's "Episode List," which also includes the episode's official number, the season in which it was first broadcast and its first airdate. In the index, the names of characters are uninverted and enclosed in single quotes to distinguish them from the names of real people. Some cross-references are followed by the phrase "[on this page]," which indicates that the heading being cross-referenced is on the same Web page as the reference. The phrase is a reminder that clicking on the cross-reference may result in no visible feedback because the cross-reference is linked to a heading that is already displayed in the window in a manner that does not require re-drawing the window.
