Portrait of Lytton Strachey
Lytton Strachey
by Vanessa Bell, 1912

Strachey loved biography but hated "those two fat volumes, with which it is our custom to commemorate the dead ... with their ill-digested masses of material, their slipshod style, their tone of tedious panegyric, their lamentable lack of selection, of detachment, of design," Instead, his Eminent Victorians provides readers with psychologically insightful, succinct and sardonic essays that lay bare the facts about four Victorian eminences - Cardinal Manning, Thomas Arnold, Florence Nightingale and General Gordon - and a supporting cast of lesser Victorian specimens, including Sir Evelyn Baring, Lord Hartington and Cardinal Newman. It's a landmark work, and great fun.
